A New Kind of Landscape Photography

Here’s a unique view of our backyard, the Colorado Rocky Mountains as you’ve never seen them before. In September 2015 a satellite named WorldView-3 was flying along it’s usual route from pole to pole, high above the eastern Pacific Ocean. On September 10th, a lazy summer day, WorldView-3 followed a different path. In the late morning, as it passed over the Pacific, it circled back and took a look at the continent to the east. Gazing over California; the Mojave desert; the Grand Canyon; and the southern tip of Utah, it captured an image of Colorado. That image, never before released to the public, can be seen at A New Kind of Landscape Photography. The author gives a detailed breakdown of the interactive image, which you can make full screen and move around. Check out the Gunnison & Crested Butte Valley and then zoom over to Denver. WorldView-3 is owned and operated by DigitalGlobe, a corporation that supplies imagery to the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and Google Maps. Most satellite imagery only gives us a view looking down, WorldView-3 gives the viewer a sense of landscape such as mountains and terrain.
