From way high up in the Rocky Mountains, in the skiing paradise called Crested Butte, comes a documentary called “The Mid-Timers”  – Current Film – Red Lady Films. Sharing the stories of Crested Butte in its heyday, when it was still considered a wild and lawless town, these young filmmakers set out to tell the stories of those who helped shape Crested Butte into its present day glory. In its early days, Crested Butte was a coal mining town. This provided a rough life and one had to be tough to make it. In the mid 1950’s, the coal industry faded away, the mines dried up and the town’s population dwindled from 2500 to a handful of brave souls who weren’t about to leave, even in the face of economic collapse. It was 1961 when a young adventure seeker decided to put in a ski lift in Crested Butte. This changed the direction for this mountain town and forever changed it’s economy and demographics. Crested Butte has continued to thrive as they try and find the balance between development and preservation. Be sure to check out the Current Film – Red Lady Films and see how these “mid-timers” shaped the town we love today.
