Summer time is here in the great Colorado Rocky Mountains and visitors are flocking to our mountain towns. Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley are top destinations. While on your way, we suggest you check out the Getaway Guide: Spend a Weekend in Gunnison, Colorado. Crested Butte is a wonderful summer destination however, there is plenty to see and do in both Gunnison and Crested Butte. Spend two days exploring the beautiful Gunnison Valley with the Getaway Guide: Spend a Weekend in Gunnison, Colorado. Be sure to bring you mountain bike and explore the valley’s 750 miles of suburb mountain biking trails. Before you head out stop by the Double Shot Cyclery located on Main Street in Gunnison for breakfast, coffee, and advice on what trails might be best suited for you. After a morning of riding, stop in Gunnison at one of the many great local restaurants for lunch or the Alpine Brewery for lunch and a cold, locally brewed beer. Hop on the free RTA bus to Crested Butte for the afternoon and check out historic Elk Avenue or make your way north to the historic, once abandoned “ghost town” of Gothic and check out the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL). Day two takes you out to the Curecanti National Recreational Area which follows the Gunnison River through the Blue Mesa Reservoir, the Marrow Point Reservoir and the Crystal Reservoir. With miles and miles of hiking trails you may want to plan for an extra day! Hike down into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison or take a Marrow Point Boat Tour for a more mellow option to see the the Black Canyon. After a day of hiking, you’re sure to be hungry. Stop at the Elk Creek Marina and enjoy lunch on the deck at Pappy’s which overlooks the Elk Creek Marina. And to end the day right, on you way back to Gunnison be sure to stop at the Gunnison Observatory for a little stargazing.
