Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the Forest Service on Snodgrass: It’s time to meet and talk

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010
Hi Everyone,
Looks likes it not over till it’s over.  Talks will resume soon regarding the proposed Snodrass Expansion.  Hopefully some ideas will come about that both sides can agree on.

As an avid rock climber, hiker, scuba diver, mountain biker and snowboarder I’ve become quite a comfortable member of the Crested Butte Community. I feel I bring a strong energetic presence to the Benson Sotheby’s International Realty team and the Crested Butte Real Estate market in general having worked my way up to Benson Sotheby’s third highest producer.  In addition to my recreational adventures I love to travel having been to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, China and South Africa. My enthusiasm, hard work, and honesty will serve all of you to the fullest, helping each of you find the perfect investment and/or dream mountain home.
Cheers,
Corey

Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the Forest Service on Snodgrass: It’s time to meet and talk

Written by Mark Reaman

Wednesday, 21 July 2010
The two sides will meet—eventually

The Snodgrass issue appears to be in wait-and-see mode. Both Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) and regional U.S. Forest Service officials agree there will be a meeting between the two, but no date has been set and the meeting isn’t likely to occur in any hurry.

News Generic

U.S. Forest Service chief Tom Tidwell’s office last week upheld previous agency decisions to not allow lift served ski expansion onto Snodgrass, as proposed by CBMR. The original decision was made by Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest (GMUG) supervisor Charlie Richmond last fall. The Tidwell ruling was the final administrative appeal on the matter and CBMR is now weighing its future options.
“The decision calls for Charlie to get to us and give us some potential options with Snodgrass. So we will give him good-faith time to get with us,” said CBMR president Tim Mueller. “We read chief Tidwell’s decision as we are obligated to wait on that.”
GMUG forest external affairs officer Lee Ann Loupe said Tuesday that Richmond was out of the office but they all anticipated having a sit-down meeting with CBMR officials, once the passion and emotion over the issue had subsided.
“Basically we plan to set up a meeting to open up some dialogue,” Loupe said. “We want to let things settle down a bit. As Charlie said last week, this is an issue that has stirred a lot of passion on both sides. We want everyone to have the chance to digest the Tidwell decision. That decision just came out last week and folks need to figure out where everyone is with the decision. I am sure we will sit down with Tim and Diane and talk about the future. I just don’t know when that will happen yet.”
Loupe said that if the Muellers feel an “urgent need” to open the dialogue sooner rather than later, they can call the Forest Service “but as time allows, we will move forward. We have some internal dialoguing to do over this as well,” Loupe said. “There is still a lot of passion and emotion associated with Snodgrass.”
Tim Mueller said they would respect the cool-down period and give Richmond a chance to formulate some options the ski area might consider with Snodgrass. “We are willing to listen to his ideas,” said Mueller.

CARBONDALE, Colorado — The ribbon was only just being cut to mark the official opening of the first phase of the new Crystal Valley Trail Friday afternoon when Jay Jahani was already dreaming of a bike ride to Crested Butte.

“I’m so happy to be here for the opening today, it’s one of my dreams,” said Jahani, of Glenwood Springs, who was one of about 80 people who turned out to celebrate the official opening of the new 5.2-mile section of paved trail from Carbondale to the BRB Campground.

“But I’m really looking forward to having it continue all the way over Kebler Pass some day,” he said.

Ellen Sassano of Carbondale agreed.

“This is great, but more than that I can’t wait until it goes over to Crested Butte,” she said.

Crested Butte Fetes its role in Mountain Biking Lore

R. Scott Rappold
The Gazette/AP
Aspen, CO Colorado

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. — Glo Cunningham’s first attempt to ride Pearl Pass did not begin well.

“I had a three-speed and two of my three speeds broke on my way up the hill out of town,” the 61-year-old cyclist from Crested Butte recalled. “Fortunately, the one that worked was the low gear.”

The year was 1980 and these were not the sleek, lightweight bicycles of today, but 35-pound monstrosities, Schwinns meant for leisurely trips on gentle pavement. Pearl Pass was the opposite, an old, 40-mile mule train route between Crested Butte and Aspen, which tops out at 12,700 feet, holds snow through August and runs through some of the roughest terrain in Colorado.

More parties on wheels than the organized rides of today, these early trips have become legendary, as Crested Butte cyclists “pushed, dragged and carried” their “klunkers” into mountain biking history.

Late last month, cyclists celebrated the 30th anniversary of Fat Tire Bike Week, the nation’s oldest mountain bike festival. Its roots are traced to these rides over Pearl Pass, and it is an iconic event for Colorado’s iconic mountain-biking town.

Homebuilders Buying up Lots – Good Sign for Market Rebound in Denver

Denver Post: Despite softening sales in the new-home market, national home building companies in the Denver area are continuing to buy lots, significantly driving up prices from where they were a year ago.

It’s part of their push to have communities to build in when their existing inventory runs out and to position themselves for an economic turnaround.

The push to buy lots comes even as sales of new homes collapsed in May, falling 18.3 percent nationally compared with the same period last year.

“At the end of last year, we had just one active community that we could still sell homes in in 2011,” said Matt Janke, director of land acquisition for Meritage Homes’ Denver office.

Over the last six months, Meritage Homes has snapped up about 600 lots in 13 communities, and the company isn’t stopping — it closed on four land deals last week.

“As long as I can underwrite the deal and the market data supports the deal, we will continue to buy,” Janke said. “We have no cap on what we can buy.”

Meritage recently bought 72 lots in the Smoky Hill corridor for $43,000 apiece from an investor who paid $24,000 each last summer, Janke said.

“It’s still a fantastic price, but it shows there’s an appreciation in the market,” he said.

Almost 400 acres of scenic open space will be permanently set aside for public use in Crested Butte because of deal worked out this week.
The property north of Gothic Road between the town and Mount Crested Butte soon will be available for winter and summer recreation, elk habitat and wetlands, It also offers spectacular views of the town and mountain, according to the Trust for Public Land, which brokered the deal.
Officials called it the largest land conservation transaction in the town’s history.
“This property serves as the ultimate conservation puzzle piece — connecting four existing open space parcels, buffering national forest, and providing recreational access to the backcountry,” Justin Spring, the project manager for the Trust for Public Land, said in a statement.
