2011-2012 Winter Airline Schedule

Access to Crested Butte this winter is quick and easy thanks to direct, non-stop flights into the Gunnison/Crested Butte (GUC) Regional Airport from several major cities across the country. Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) and the Gunnison County Rural Transportation Association (RTA) have diligently negotiated air service for the 2011-2012 winter season from three major carriers: American Airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines, with flights from Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH) and Denver (DEN). The full direct service schedule begins December 15th & 16th.

Local and discounted fares have been announced. Please be sure to take advantage of these discounted fares. The more people use our direct flights, the better it is for our overall air service program. The first is a holiday fare sale through American Airlines and the second is the standard United local’s fare which has been extended through December 2012. More detailed information about both deals is posted at www.flygcb.com.

American Airlines is offering holiday airfares for travel originating from the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) starting at $198* per round trip ($99 each way based on a required round-trip, economy-class purchase).  Required dates of travel from GUC are Dec. 15 “22, 2011, with return to GUC from Dec. 31, 2011“ Jan. 7, 2012.  Tickets must be purchased at least 14 days prior to departure, and fare examples do not include taxes and fees.

United Airlines, which flies into GUC year-round, continues to offer a round-trip local’s fare for $161.40 (must originate in GUC).  A one-way only fare originating in GUC is $109.70.  Both are subject to availability and valid for travel through Dec. 13, 2012.  There is a minimum one-night stay and maximum 30-night stay, and tickets must be booked locally at least one day in advance through Crested Butte Vacations, 349-2287, or at the United desk at the airport, which is open 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. except when a flight is being serviced.  You must be a Colorado resident, and Colorado residence identification may be required at check-in.  There is a $10 ticketing fee to book the fare through Crested Butte Vacations.

CBMR Environmental Efforts

CBMR has made great strides in becoming a greener resort. In 2010, CBMR joined the Colorado Industrial Energy Challenge (CIEC), as one of 13 charter members in the state. By signing on, the resort committed to reducing energy consumption by two percent each year for five consecutive years, using 2008 as the base year. In June of 2011, CBMR won the Excellence in Energy Efficiency award from Governor John Hickenlooper and the Governor Energy Office for reducing energy use by 18.9 percent in the first year. Mountain Operations crews and all CBMR staff are very committed to this endeavor and it shows in everything they do, from making snow to turning off lights and turning down the heat at night.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort Updates

Zipline Tour – The new Crested Butte Zipline Tour opened June 28 and is now up and running for the winter season. The guided tour includes five zip lines and three suspended bridges that have been uniquely adapted to accommodate winter operations. The Crested Butte Zipline Tour is available during the summer, fall and winter seasons and has been welcomed with resounding success. To date, we’ve already had 3,225 zippers enjoy the tour and look forward to offering it for our winter guests as well for $59 per person. The winter operations will begin at the yurt located at the base of the zipline and right in front of the kids learning area by the Whetstone building. At the yurt, guests will get fitted for their harnesses where the necessary safety instructions explained. Each tour will then make their way down to the Peachtree lift for a ride up to the top of the zipline and enjoy the approximate 2-hour zipping experience. We hope you enjoy this added amenity to the resort.

Paradise Warming House “Paradise was one of our biggest endeavors this summer season and will look much different when it opens for the season in the coming days. The cafeteria line has drastically changed, as the beverage island in the center has been removed and will now be a salad bar, offering healthier options for our guests in this location. Sections of the exterior have been resided and we are in the process of updating all of the signage to better fit our brand here at CBMR and give Paradise a more comprehensive updated feel. We hope you enjoy the changes done to date. Also, the sewer lines in an around Paradise have been addressed. We replace 3,000 feet of pipe line, so we have our fingers crossed that the plaguing odor has finally been mitigated at the base of the Paradise Lift.

Ten Peaks “Camp 4  no longer wished to utilize the location at the top of Painter Boy, worry not, they are still in their same location in Mountaineer Square.  So CBMR has taken over the small building at the top of Painter Boy, given it a little paint job, with hopes of future capital dollars being designated to this beautiful location, which houses some of the best views in the valley. Ten Peaks is the new name and we hope to capitalize on the beach front and will continue to offer guests, coffee, pre-made sandwiches, soups and a full service bar.

Treasury Building “We are currently in a multi-phase project with Treasury to update the building and modernize the look. As you may remember we worked extensively on the interior last year and this year we decided to start focusing on the exterior. We have installed new doors on both sides of the building, which also have an automatic door component for our guests, providing easier access and a more welcoming environment.  In addition, we have replaced the sidewalk on the Elevation side of the building with new pavers. The plan is to continue the exterior improvements next year.

Yellow, gold and orange aspen leaves are beginning to appear as more and more summer visitors leave the valley to return home making this one of the best times of the year to visit. Historically, a very dry and cool time of the year, September holds many activities and events for you to experience along with the beautiful backdrop of the blanketed fall colors.  Crested Butte Market Update Real estate sales have continued dramatically with 134 sales of condos and single family homes in the upper valley now representing a 30% increase over the same period last year. It is evident with $57,108,553 in sales and another 41 transactions of over $22,000,000 more under contract that buyers are taking advantage of the substantial decrease in median list prices this year. Yet, it is also clear the affluent buyer that knows what they want are spending their disposable income as seen with nine high end homes in the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte that have sold and/or have gone under contract in the last month with an average price per square foot of $564! Land sales are on the rise as well with 21 transactions so far this year for a total of $2,984,800 representing a 38% increase over same period last year. Another $1,515,800 worth of land is currently under contract and due to close soon. Crested Butte Mountain Resort Capital Improvements Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) kicks off the 2011-2012 season with improvements in all areas of operations, ensuring continued focus on the guest experience. Enhancements include: a new Zipline Tour for the summer and winter seasons; renovations to the Paradise Warming House restaurant; a new fleet of high-end demo gear and a new Learn-to-Ride snowboard fleet for women and children; and a partnership with Patagonia for new employee uniforms over the next couple of seasons and products for the resort’s retail outlets. The coming season also concludes CBMR’s yearlong celebration of 50 years of skiing with an opening day tribute on November 23, 2011.  “We’ve concentrated our efforts on enhancements that will resonate with our guests,” said Ethan Mueller, vice president and general manager of CBMR. “The new Zipline Tour is a great example; it has been a huge hit this summer and we have no doubt it will offer a memorable winter adventure opportunity.” The new Crested Butte Zipline Tour opened June 28 after much anticipation and more spring snow than anticipated. The guided tour includes five zip lines and three suspended bridges that have been uniquely adapted to accommodate winter operations. The Crested Butte Zipline Tour is available during the summer, fall and winter seasons; the resort will offer the only guided zipline tour at a Colorado ski resort, and one of the only winter canopy tour operations in the state. Renovations to the Paradise Warming House, CBMR’s mid-mountain cafeteria-style on-mountain restaurant, include a food line redesign and an updated look and feel. The remodel will improve service and use of space, while preserving the casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere that Crested Butte is famous for. CBMR will update its rental fleet with new high-end demo skis and snowboards, featuring brands such as Rossignol, Salomon, RAMP, Nordica, Atomic, and 4-frnt. The resort is also purchasing new Burton Learn-to-Ride (LTR) snowboards, to enhance the women’s and children’s fleets. And, thanks to the resort’s new partnership with Patagonia, CBMR retail outlets will carry an entire line from this stand-out outdoor apparel manufacturer and staff will be outfitted in new uniforms featuring Gore-Tex® throughout the next two years. In addition to all of the capital improvements that have taken place since the Muellers joined the resort, CBMR has made great strides in becoming a “greener” resort. USA Pro Cycling Challenge a Huge Success “Crested Butte was unbelievable. It was a home run,” said Sean Petty, the chief operating officer of USA Cycling, the governing body for the sport in the United States. “To see this on a Tuesday afternoon and experience the finish was great for a first-year event. It felt like a stage in the Tour de France.” “Everyone had a smile. Everyone had a blast. Everyone was screaming at the finish line. That in itself says success,” said local organizing committee co-chair Aaron Huckstep.  His counterpart, Dave Ochs, seconded the sentiment. “Hot damn. It happened and it happened well,” he said. “The production guys say we get a 99.9, and they said they never give out accolades that high.” Click here for full story. Paragon People’s Fair – Sept. 3rd and 4th If you haven’t been to Crested Butte to experience the homespun cultural experience of People’s Fair then you haven’t seen this awesome town at it’s finest! For the past 20 years the Paragon Gallery artists have hosted the this annual event, an eclectic mix of 70 booths selling unique regional arts and crafts, collectibles and antiques, preserved food from local gardens, music, and more in a fun, family oriented environment. Crested Butte Fall Festival of Beers and Chili Cook-Off – Sept. 10th With 15+ breweries expected to attend and former Widespread Panic guitarist Sam Holt and his all star band on tap, the Crested Butte / Mt. Crested Butte Chamber is gearing up for another awesome Mt.Crested Butte Fall Festival of Beers and Chili Cook-off. Gates open at noon on Saturday, September 10th,  and the festivities go until 6PM. Admission is only $25 for chili sampling (from noon-2, while supplies last), an unlimited beer tasting from noon-3, and music from Better Late Than Never, The Springdale Quartet, and the Sam Holt Band! Do you have a first-rate or unusual chili recipe?  If so, participate in the chili contest, which is free to enter. All you need to do is make up 3 gallons of your best and bring it to the festival where attendees will vote on their favorite chili in the following categories: International Chili Society Red (No Beans or Fillers), Anything Goes, Professionals Only (Restaurant Owners and Chefs) Vegetarian, and Green. September 9-10 Teams of 2 anglers each will fish private and public water to compete for the most inches of trout. A classic 2-fly contest, which includes a commemorative shirt & hat, reception Friday night, breakfast, lunch and a barbeque dinner Saturday night. Entry fee is $500 per team. If you are not fishing in Superfly but would like to attend for the barbeque 6:30 Saturday night at The Almont Resort, tickets are available for $20 each. Having artists painting en plein air throughout the Crested Butte area in July was a huge hit, for both the artists and our patrons. The sun is

still shining on Red Lady but the dropping evening temperatures are leading us into another beautiful Colorado season: Autumn. We would like to invite a select few artists back out to Crested Butte to paint the changing leaves.

Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery is looking for anyone interested in earning gallery credit for their hospitality. The most aspens will be ablaze with color around September 20th, so we are looking to house around 8-10 artists September 17th through September 24th. We have two options in mind: a host that is willing to house all attending artists or multiple hosts willing to house one artist. Either option would earn $45 per night per artist in gallery credit.

This is a zero-pressure inquiry; we are merely trying to assess whether a paint out this fall would be possible! We understand this is relatively last minute, however, the whole event would be small scale and very low key. USA Pro Cycling Challenge

Hi Everyone,

As we prepare for this epic event to come through our Valley on August 23^rd and 24^th, we are doing our best to provide you with the most accurate and up to date information as possible. Please attend a Community Informational Meeting on Monday, August 15^th from 5 – 6pm at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square.

Please note that information as well as news and updates can also be found at www.upccinfo.com. There will also be updates on the new CB/Mt. CB USA Pro Cycling Challenge Facebook page.

Please reference the attached documents for the most recent road closure information as well as information regarding the Mountain Express bus service schedule on the day of the race. There will be no RTA schedule changes during race day. RTA delays can be expected due to rolling road closures though there will be no schedule deviations.

The course maps for Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte and Gunnison have been finalized and can be found here.

Where to Watch the Action:

• Whiterock and Gothic – Racers turn into Town at high speed
• 1^st and Whiterock – a second 90-degree high-speed turn
• 1^st and Elk – Racers jostle for perfect position coming into the Sprint Line on Elk Avenue
• Post Office Parking Lot – See all the action as racers cross the Sprint Line in Crested Butte, plus beer garden and jumbotron.
• The 4-way – Wide enough for racers to reach high speeds on the last serious corner before the finish
• Gothic Road and Washington Gulch/Rec Path – Watch racers crest the first ramp headed to the finish, then watch them complete the climb up to the finish area
• Pitchfork – Join locals on their front porches as riders suffer through one of the steepest sections of the climb to the finish
• Snowcrest Footbridge – Watch racers arrive into Mt. Crested Butte, then turn around to see them work for the finish.  Be here early to claim one of these coveted spots as they are sure to be taken quickly!
• Finish Line Festival – watch from right beside Gothic Road as racers edge closer and closer to the finish
• VIP and Hospitality Area – for a small cost, see the racers fight to the finish from the perfect venue, complete with included food and drink.  Contact Aaron Huckstep at huck@hucksteplaw.com to obtain tickets for the VIP area.
• Cottonwood Pass— A shuttle operated by Western State College will be available for transportation:

• Shuttle departures are scheduled for 7 am, 8 am, and 9 am on Wednesday, August 24. The shuttles will depart from the US Forest Service Parking Area, directly south of the Taylor Park Trading Post (http://www.taylorparktradingpost.com/images/TPRmap.GIF). Free parking is available in this area for shuttle participants. The plan is to take the first shuttle at 7 am as high up on Cottonwood Pass as possible.  The 8 am and 9 am shuttles would then take passengers ¾ to ½ way up Cottonwood Pass or further up as space is available.  Due to regulations with the US Forest Service WSC can only accept donations, with the proceeds supporting club sports at Western State.  The suggested donation is $10 per person.   PLEASE NOTE: County Road 724 (Taylor Canyon Road) will be closed at 8 am on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, please plan accordingly as you make your travel plans for the shuttle service. Townie Crit,Tuesday August 23, 2011, 11:45, Elk Avenue Sprint Line

Kick off the day Crested Butte style by participating in the much anticipated return of the Townie Criterium!  Watch or participate as racers speed around town, and through the legendary Talk of the Town on their most coveted bikes of all; their townie bikes.  As with all great events in Crested Butte, costumes encouraged!  Rumor has it that Ben Preston has been doing double-secret training to “defend” his long-lost title.  To participate, register on the Brick Oven deck after 10:00. The cost is $10.

US Handcycling Criterium, Tuesday August 23, 2011, 1:00, Elk Avenue Sprint Line

As a part of the U.S. Para Cycling Challenge, and in partnership with the Adaptive Sports Center, Crested Butte will host the US Handcycling Criterium on August 23, 2011. Handcyclists will participate in a 30-minute timed race on an 8/10 mile circuit. The race will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Sprint Line for the Pro Race (Elk Avenue between 2^nd and 3^rd). The competition is expected to draw 15 – 20 top Para Cyclists from all over the nation. Awards will take place at 1:45pm. Crested Butte Sprint Line Beer Garden, Tuesday August 23, 2011, 11:00am – 11:00pm, Crested Butte Sprint Finish Line

Enjoy libations from Sierra Nevada and Avery Brewing Company while watching the race action unfold all day on the jumbotron.  Located on the Elk Avenue Sprint line, the beer garden also boasts premier viewing of the Sprint Line, Townie Crit and US Handcycling Criterium. From 7pm to 10pm, challenge your buddies to a simulated 500 meter sprint. Participants will race side by side on stationary bikes for their own taste of victory. Spandex is optional yet encouraged.

Strider Cup, Tuesday August 23, 2011, 1:00, Mt. Crested Butte Finish Line

Even the littlest of riders can experience the thrill of racing across the finish line.  Stop by the Strider tent in the Festival to register or at the finish line 15 minutes before the race. A very limited number of bikes will be available, please bring your own to ensure a spot for your child. Little racers can race across the finish line at 1:00 or on a special course within the festival throughout the entirety of the day.

Mt. Crested Butte Finish Festival, Tuesday August 23, 2011, 11 – 5, Mt. Crested Butte

In Mt. Crested Butte, the finish line will come alive with a Finish Festival including live music and a “Taste of the Town” planned from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., where you can see the race unfold via live video feeds all while enjoying beverages from Sierra Nevada. Take advantage of food and product vendors, a kids area, two jumbotrons, beer garden, and a live music stage with multiple acts throughout the day. The live music starts at 11:30 with the Fiddling Foresters. After the awards ceremony, make your way to the Red Lady Stage for a performance from folk/pop songstress Megan Burtt. Megan was recently honored as one of only 6 2011 NewFolk Competition winners. She has performed at the legendary Red Rocks Ampitheater, shared stages with Braddigan (of Dispatch), Brendan James and Toad the Wet Sprocket, toured listening rooms, clubs, living rooms, prisons and military barracks and is hard at work on two side projects (Travel By Skylark and The Dance Cards) as well as her sophomore recording with The Cure For Love (due early 2012). Bring your lawnchairs, family and friends and enjoy one of the last outdoor concerts in Crested Butte for the summer. Outside alcohol and pets are not allowed.

Chase the Race, Wednesday August 24, 2011, 7:00 am, Crested Butte to Aspen

After watching the spectacular Stage 1 finish in the town of Mt Crested Butte on Aug 23rd, take part in the inaugural ‘Chase The Race’ stage to watch the next day’s finish in downtown Aspen, CO.
On August 24th, as Stage 2 of the USAPCC leaves Gunnison, CO to race over both Cottonwood & Independence Passes en-route to Aspen, we will follow in the tire treads of history, by riding from downtown Crested Butte over historic Pearl Pass, and on into downtown Aspen to catch the Stage 2 finish. Being dubbed ‘Chase The Race’, this event is a chance to experience the early rides of some of mountain biking’s great pioneers, like Gary Fisher, Tom Breeze, Don Cook, and more, when they used this route as one of the inspirations to help develop the beginnings of the modern day mountain bike. An annual event every September to this day, this will be a special and unique way for cycling enthusiasts to be a part of the sports history and its future.
