2011 Running Events on the Fast Track in Gunnison County, Colorado

Fun runs, relays and races on tap for April – December

The trails that have made Gunnison County, Colorado, world renowned for mountain bikers also are a haven for runners. From mid-May, when snows gradually begins receding to reveal a carpet of wildflowers, to early October, when the aspen have concluded their stunning fall show, trails in the area always astound with their beauty and variety. Yet, the running season stretches even further with the new Sage-Grouse 5k and 10k on April 9, new Living Journeys Half-Marathon on July 30 and a New Year’s Eve resolution run on Dec. 31.

This may be why many runners who train at the high altitudes of the Gunnison-Crested Butte valley have a strong presence in high-profile endurance races in Colorado and around the world at all levels, from prep, college and beyond.  While Gunnison-Crested Butte athletes tend to take their sports seriously, there also is a sense of camaraderie in welcoming all levels of participants for running events and a desire to keep it fun.

All proceeds benefit Gunnison Trails’ Sage-Grouse Conservation Initiative.

One of the local favorites is the “Grin and Bear It” run that happens in July and traverses a 9-mile course from Crested Butte to Green Lake and back, gaining approximately 1,500 feet in elevation.  Another favorite is the “Cart to Cart” run in June that goes from Crested Butte to Crested Butte South, covering 15 miles mostly on trails.  A $25 annual membership in the Crested Butte Mountain Runners includes entry into all runs, with a few exceptions such as “Grin and Bear It.”  Non-members pay $5 per fun run.  For details, visit http://www.cbmountainrunners.org/.

Sage Burner Trail Race, Gunnison, May 28

Crested Butte and back.  All events take place at Hartman Rocks except for the Gran Fondo.

Crested Butte. This 190-mile epic adventure is billed as a “Running party with friends. You might sleep, you might not.” For registration information and more, visit www.epicrelays.com/rmr-home.

Crested Butte and winds up the mountain on a combination of dirt roads and single track trails, featuring steady uphill, downhill and rolling cross-country terrain.  The field is limited to 75 runners, and prizes will be presented to the top male and female runners in general and masters categories as well as the top runner fund-raiser.

Living Journeys provides local men, women and children living with cancer with direct financial grants, emotional support via counseling as well as education and awareness.  Pre-registration is $40 or $50 the day of the race, which includes a t-shirt and barbecue celebration after the run and hike.  Register online at http://www.crestedbuttesummithike.zapevent.com/.

Lead King Loop & Quarry Climb, Marble & Crystal, Sept. 18

The 25k Lead King Loop course starts in Marble, rounding Beaver Lake, climbing 2,900 vertical feet in about 4 miles into the backcountry Lead King Basin, and switch backing down past waterfalls to the old mining town of Crystal.  The race passes the famous 110-year-old Crystal Mill and climbs out of the river valley before a fast downhill finish at Beaver Lake Lodge. The 12.5k Quarry Climb course starts at the Beaver Lake Lodge, winds through Marble until crossing the Crystal River and climbs approximately 1,200 feet in 3 miles through an aspen grove to the base of the marble quarry. Return downhill to the finish with amazing vistas of the valley and Yule Creek.

There’s also the Lake Kids Loop, a scenic and relatively flat 1.25 mile run around Beaver Lake for kids and their parents.  The races benefit Marble Charter School.  For more information, visit http://www.leadkingloop25k.com/or call (970) 704-1275.  Register online at http://www.active.com/.

Frozen Buns Resolution Run, Crested Butte, Dec. 31

The annual Frozen Buns Resolution Run, a 5K organized by the Gunnison Valley Health Foundation to kick off New Year’s on the right foot, starts at the Crested Butte Visitor Center at 5 p.m. and makes its way toward Peanut Lake with tiki torches, glow sticks, flashlights and alpenglow lighting the way.  The resolution part of the run comes when each participant carries their personal resolution for the new year on a piece of paper to the halfway point and places it into a small cauldron of fire, where hot chocolate and cider await.  Kids can take part, too, with the “Are We There Yet?” one-mile run, also at 5 p.m.  The cost is $25 for adults – $10 for kids. Registration is available the day of the race. Dress warm!

Crested Butte’s 43rd Annual Flauschink Flushes Out Winter & Welcomes Spring Celebrate this quirky end-of-ski-season festival on March 30 – April 1

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Crested Butte’s 43rd Annual Flauschink Flushes Out Winter & Welcomes Spring Celebrate this quirky end-of-ski-season festival on March 30 – April 1.

The last weekend of ski and snowboard season isn’t a quiet occasion in “Colorado’s Last Great Ski Town,” Crested Butte, where the expected rarely happens. Locals and visitors will be flushing out winter and welcoming spring at the 43rd annual Flauschink, March 30 – April 3, 2011.

Pre-Flauschink festivities begin at Talk of the Town on Wednesday, March 30 with a 7 p.m. slide show at the Talk of the Town by Dr. Duane Vandenbusche, a Western State College (WSC) history professor and authority on Gunnison County and Colorado history. A Flauschink tale also will be told by George Sibley, founder of Flauschink and a retired WSC professor. The cost is $4 with a Flauschink button and $7 without a button.

Flauschink officially kicks off with a coronation ball held on Friday, April 1 at 9 p.m. to crown the new king and queen and enjoy an evening of polka dancing with the Pete Dunda Polka Band at The Eldo. The cost is $5 with a button and $8 without a button.

The king and queen of Flauschink typically have three things in common: they are involved in the community, enjoy longtime resident status, and are held in high esteem by other locals. A parade on Saturday, April 2, honors the king and queen as they proudly raise scepters made from toilet plungers, gives “Has-Been” royalty the chance to wear their crowns and ride on a float again, and provides a reason to rain down fun on Elk Avenue, Crested Butte’s historic business district. The parade will begin at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, April 3, the festival and ski season will draw to a fitting close with the Flauschink king and queen holding court on the slopes at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Skiers and snowboarders pass by Flauschink Hill, above Twister warming house deck, to toast royalty. Flauschink buttons are sold for $3 at several local businesses in Crested Butte to raise money for the festival and to provide discounts on slide show and coronation ball tickets. Also view memorabilia in the Flauschink exhibit at the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum. For more information, call festival organizer and 1996 Flauschink Queen Michelle English at (970) 349-7348.

Montanya Rum Distillery Moving to Crested Butte

Yeah, More Booze coming to Crested Butte as well as a successful sled making business. Welcome Hoskins!

For departing sledmaker, there’s just too much “no” in Silverton

Brice Hoskin, co-owner of Mountain Boy Sledworks, pilots one of his sleds down Silverton

Brice Hoskin, co-owner of Mountain Boy Sledworks, pilots one of his sleds down Silverton’s Kendall Mountain. After two years of fighting with local officials, Hoskin and his wife Karen are leaving Silverton, moving their sled company and popular Montanya rum distillery to Crested Butte. (Jason Blevins, The Denver Post)

SILVERTON — Since 2002, Brice and Karen Hoskin’s Mountain Boy Sledworks has joined a rowdy ski area, a burly snowboardmaker and a funky telemark skimaker in elevating this town as a high-country hamlet of innovative thinkers and big-mountain toymakers.

But after two years of well-publicized wrangling with Silverton officials over licenses, zoning, lights and banners, the Hoskins are moving their renowned sledmaking business and their growing Montanya rum distillery to Crested Butte, dealing a hefty blow to the isolated village of 500 and spreading worry throughout the local business community.

“There’s no vision here,” says Karen Hoskin, former executive director of the San Juan Development Association, who once counted her “greatest qualification” for that job as her “love for Silverton.”

Spring Happenings at the J.C. Leacock Photo Gallery

It’s hard to believe that the ski season here in Crested Butte will end in only three weeks!  We’ve had a fantastic winter for skiing this year with tons of great snow, epic powder days, and still plenty left with some of the snowbanks at my house and in town as as 15 feet.  And though it’s winding down,  we still have some great events coming up, including the costume adorned Al Johnson uphill-downhill telemark race, Gay Ski Week, Soul Train Night, and Flaushink.

To add to the festivities, all winter themed prints in the gallery will be 20% off starting on March 19th, until the end of the month.  Additionally, during Gay Ski Week, the gallery will be joining other merchants in town by donating 5% of our proceeds to the

Greetings!

As spring is approaching, but snow is still falling, perhaps you are dreaming of warmer weather and the blooms it inspires? How fortuitous then, for us to introduce two new gallery artists whose paintings celebrate the poetry of the land in more temperate climates. Dave Santillanes’ tonalist paintings of sun-warmed hills, colored in summer’s magical light, connect us to something vast and full of wonder; Chloe Hedden’s large scale, close-range florals evoke the flowing rhythms and patterns of nature and lure us with their seductively beautiful hues. We hope this glimpse of their art will prompt further review, and of course, feed your soul and warm your heart until spring/summer arrive! Please note all paintings are available for purchase. Call us for details – 970-349-5936.

Regards – Kathleen Perry , Shaun, Dawn, Sarah and Ivy

Also don’t miss our salute to the remaining months of snow in Crested Butte as in Dawn Cohen’s charming “Soupcon Winter 2011″.
